Academia Sinica Estimates Next Year’s GDP Growth and Points to Five Major Uncertainties

Academia Sinica’s Institute of Economics released its outlook and estimated that Taiwan’s GDP will grow 7.41% this year, and 3.71% next year. The research team said this year’s growth is mainly supported by exports and investment, while fourth-quarter consumption has stabilized because of holiday spending and a tax cut on car purchases.

Looking ahead to next year, Academia Sinica warned of five uncertainties, including U.S. monetary and trade policies, the strength of China’s economic recovery, geopolitical risks and supply-chain restructuring, the speed of AI industrialization, and whether Taiwan’s labor and capital allocation can adjust to industry changes.

U.S. Raises Voluntary Departure Bonus to Reduce Deportation Costs

The U.S. government announced that undocumented immigrants who voluntarily leave the country before the end of this year may receive a 3,000-dollar bonus, and the government will also cover their travel costs. The Department of Homeland Security said applicants must use the CBP Home app to complete the process and may be exempt from fines related to overstay.

This amount is three times higher than the previous offer, and the goal is to reduce the high costs of arrests and forced deportations. The new measure may help save enforcement resources, but immigration groups question the data and the policy’s effectiveness. Deportation and arrest numbers have not yet reached the annual target, and the government is also tightening legal immigration channels.

Niigata Approves Restart of Major Nuclear Power Plant, Power May Return Next January

Japan’s energy policy is seeing a major shift as the Niigata Prefectural Assembly approved the restart of the world’s largest nuclear power plant, the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa facility, which may resume power generation as early as late January next year. This decision may help strengthen energy security, but it has triggered strong opposition from residents, and many Fukushima evacuees fear that a similar tragedy could happen again.

Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings said it will ensure safety and promised to invest 100 billion yen in Niigata over the next ten years. The government and the operator will face the challenge of balancing energy needs with public safety concerns.

Revealing Hidden Business Costs with Activity Value Management

A professor from Department of Accounting, National Chengchi University combined the balanced scorecard and activity-based cost management to propose Activity Value Management, which helps companies break down costs into specific activities and products and identify issues such as long-term losses and dependence on major customers.

Experts said that many Taiwanese companies often underestimate hidden costs and misunderstand their real sources of profit. Through data analysis, small and medium-sized enterprises can set prices more accurately, plan research and development, and shape their transformation strategies to strengthen long-term competitiveness.

Why Stress Drives You to Eat? The Truth of Emotional Eating Uncovered

When people feel stressed or emotionally low, many turn to high sugar and high fat foods for comfort, a behavior known as emotional eating. This is not a lack of willpower, but a way of using food to manage emotions.

Experts say that by telling the difference between types of hunger, being honest about the emotions behind eating, and changing the eating environment to reduce temptation, people can gradually build a healthier cycle and become more aware of their food choices.

Let’s wrap up today’s episode. We’ve learned about some important events happening around the world.

  • Academia Sinica sees steady growth ahead but warns that U.S. policy, China’s recovery, geopolitics, AI, and Taiwan’s industrial adjustment will shape next year’s outlook.

  • The U.S. boosts bonuses for voluntary departures to save costs, though immigration groups doubt its effectiveness as enforcement results lag and legal pathways tighten.

  • Japan’s move to restart the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa Nuclear Power Plant marks an energy shift but heightens safety concerns among residents.

  • Activity Value Management helps companies uncover hidden costs and make clearer profit decisions, giving small and medium-sized businesses a stronger path toward long-term competitiveness.

  • Emotional eating happens when people use food to cope with stress, and learning to recognize hunger and emotions can lead to healthier eating choices.

In the next episode, we will together explore the recent hot news with you in the morning. Don’t forget to come back. Have a nice day and hear me next time. Bye.
