Welcome to “Hot English Topics.” This is Clarence from CLN. In recent years, the pandemic, social instability, and rising pressure have left many people in long-term emotional exhaustion. This growing need for comfort has driven the rise of the “healing economy.” This market of spending money to find relief is expected to reach $7 trillion by 2025, and more than 80 percent of people in Taiwan are willing to pay for stress relief. This shows that emotional needs have become one of the most powerful drivers in the global economy. Today, we will talk about why we need healing, what common forms it takes, how to tell real needs from marketing tactics, and how we can regain inner control instead of relying only on external help.
Many people today face heavy psychological pressure. In Taiwan, the stress index has long ranked second in the world, with 96 percent of people often feeling stressed, second only to South Korea. This stress affects health, with nearly 4 million people suffering from insomnia in 2023 and more than 2 million showing depressive symptoms. Where does this stress come from? For most people, it first comes from high housing prices, rising living costs, and slow salary growth. It is then increased by tiredness from high-pressure work environments and worries about personal and family health. After the pandemic, global instability and inflation increased mental strain, while many people cannot stay focused on the present and often think about “what might have happened.” These factors lead to anxiety and unhappiness, and make more people seek healing and emotional relief.
Faced with strong demand, healing methods are usually seen in two types. External healing focuses on temporary escape through spending, such as massages and physical relaxation, which create about NT$20.5 billion in annual value in Taiwan. Plush toys and blind boxes are part of the “cute economy” and are especially popular among young people because they provide emotional comfort. Food is also a common choice, since it is easy to get and many people rely on it to reduce stress.
At the same time, people care more about inner healing. Companies like Quanta and TSMC have introduced ‘Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction’ to help reduce stress and burnout, and the number of counseling centers in Taiwan has grown more than six times since 2011. Many young people also use tarot, Human Design, and MBTI for self understanding, or choose pilgrimage journeys to challenge their bodies and reflect deeply on themselves.
However, when companies turn emotional needs into products, their marketing practices often cause controversy. Emotional comfort and health promises are highly commercialized, and without clear rules, the market shows many problems. These include exaggerated healing effects, unlicensed services, and psychological manipulation, which may violate the Psychologist Act and make people delay proper treatment. Many healing services also have no clear standards, with high and uncertain prices, so consumers cannot easily judge their value.
Meanwhile, companies use social anxiety to create demand. Brands such as Jellycat and Pop Mart use personification and limited releases to make people pay more because they are afraid of missing out. Some healing services may also lead people to rely too much on external help, weaken their inner strength, and only chase pleasant feelings while avoiding pain, which stops them from truly learning how to manage their emotions.
The essence of healing is to brave anxiety, fear, and uncertainty, and to practice awareness and action in daily life instead of relying only on external help or quick feel-good solutions. When a person can calm themselves and take charge of their emotions, they can still find peace even in a chaotic world. This is the most precious gift that healing brings.
