Trump’s Tariff Threats Shake Markets, U.S. Stocks Slide and TSMC Shares Fall
U.S. stock markets fell sharply on January 20, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average plunging 870 points. The market was pressured after the U.S. President Donald Trump warned of a new round of tariffs on Europe, raising fears of rising trade tensions between the United States and Europe and pushing investors to pull money out of U.S. assets.
All three major indexes closed lower, with technology and semiconductor stocks leading the losses. Shares of TSMC traded in the United States fell by more than 4% on the day, showing a clear rise in risk-off sentiment and increasing short-term volatility in U.S. markets.
Winter Break Lasts Just One Day, Education Ministry Responds to Student Confusion
Elementary, junior high, and senior high schools across Taiwan held their end-of-term ceremonies on January 20 this year, but classes resumed on January 21, creating the unusual situation of “school ended yesterday, but started again today,” which upset many students.
The Ministry of Education explained that this schedule change was made to align with the Lunar New Year holiday, and the arrangement had already been announced one year earlier. The ministry added that students’ actual winter break will officially begin on January 24.
Tourist Helicopter Crashes at Mount Aso in Kumamoto, Two Taiwanese Still Under Rescue
A tourist helicopter crash occurred at Mount Aso in Kumamoto, Japan. Police and firefighters found the aircraft severely damaged near the first crater of Mount Aso’s Nakadake volcano. There were two Taiwanese tourists and one pilot on board, and their conditions have not yet been confirmed.
Due to thick fog and volcanic gas in the area, rescue operations can only fully proceed after safety conditions are assessed. The Kumamoto prefectural government said it will make every effort to support the rescue operation and will keep close contact with relevant authorities in Taiwan.
Convenience Stores Take the Lead as Taiwan’s Bakery Market Reshuffles
In recent years, convenience stores have invested heavily in the bakery market, and bread sales at 7-ELEVEN and FamilyMart have clearly increased, attracting more young customers who are willing to spend. In comparison, PX Mart focuses on family stocking needs, but its average spending per person continues to fall.
Traditional bakeries have higher prices, but they are facing challenges because customer traffic is dropping and their features are not strong enough. Experts say only by building brand differentiation and strengthening membership programs can bakeries stay competitive against convenience stores and supermarkets.
When Good Intentions Backfire, Experts Call for Respecting Choice
Interpersonal conflicts often arise from weak boundaries, as actions claimed to be for others’ good may reflect personal pride or control, without taking responsibility for the outcomes in that person’s life. This can strain relationships and even trigger negative reactions.
Healthy relationships are built on respect and support. When help is not requested, it is important to respect the other person’s right to choose, offer encouragement and presence, and allow individuals to face life’s challenges on their own.
Let’s wrap up today’s episode. We’ve learned about some important events happening around the world.
U.S. stocks slid sharply after President Trump’s tariff warnings on Europe sparked trade tension fears, dragging down major indexes and hitting technology shares, including TSMC.
Taiwanese students were confused after schools ended the term on January 20 but resumed classes the next day, as the Education Ministry adjusted the schedule to align with the Lunar New Year holiday.
A tourist helicopter crashed at Mount Aso, leaving two Taiwanese passengers and a pilot awaiting rescue as poor weather and volcanic conditions delayed operations.
Experts say Taiwan’s bakery market is shifting as convenience stores surge, PX Mart softens, and traditional bakeries fight to stay competitive.
Experts say conflicts grow when people cross boundaries in the name of helping, and healthy relationships depend on respecting personal choice.
In the next episode, we will together explore the recent hot news with you in the morning. Don’t forget to come back. Have a nice day and hear me next time. Bye.
