Welcome to “HOT English Topics.” In today’s digital world, big tech platforms track many of our daily actions. When we hit play on a Spotify playlist, order daily supplies on Coupang, or even drive a Hyundai car, these convenient services can leave a huge data footprint. In the past, many people thought data leaks only meant credit card fraud or spam messages. But recent global cybersecurity incidents have shown a harsh truth: data risks no longer stay online. They can now put our home safety—and even our lives—at risk. When online orders can reveal door codes, or a government form can be turned into a target list for armed groups, society is being forced to face a new kind of crisis: “data exposure.”
In today’s data economy, cyber threats are no longer just about stealing logins and passwords. The luxury group Kering and its brands, including Gucci and Balenciaga, have been hit by cyberattacks, and one especially risky piece of data was taken: the “total amount spent.” For victims, this puts a clear price tag on their spending power. It can lead to targeted scams—and in worst cases, even kidnapping risks aimed at high spenders. At the same time, Spotify’s data-scraping incident is another warning sign. If data from over 200 million tracks ends up in the hands of AI companies for model training, our personal taste and daily rhythm could be turned into cheap products without our permission. In a world where data is king, the cost of losing privacy is now far more than just money.
Compared with financial loss, the data leak at Coupang, South Korea’s largest e-commerce company, made people realize how fragile real-world safety can be. The incident affected 33.7 million users. A former employee used a security key that was still active to access data without permission. The investigation sounded like a movie. To hide evidence, the suspect smashed a laptop, put it in a bag filled with bricks, and threw it into a river. The most worrying detail was that the leaked data included 2,609 door-entry codes. Many users had written their building code in the delivery notes to make drop-offs easier. Because of this, hackers could get not only addresses, but also the codes needed to enter the building—like having a key. This shows how weak internal management can turn a digital leak into a real-life break-in risk.
If the Coupang case threatens residential safety, the next cases feel like an attack on people’s mental well-being and dignity. Recently, some Hyundai car owners in Taiwan received text messages claiming that their personal data had been leaked. Investigations suggest the misuse may have come from an overseas supply chain, but the key point is the method: contacting end users directly to shake their trust in the company. Another case, involving the UK trade union Prospect, goes even deeper. Members’ sexual orientation and religious beliefs were exposed. When this kind of sensitive data is made public, the harm is more than data loss. Victims may face discrimination and long-lasting emotional harm. These cases show that data protection is no longer only a technical issue—it is a key line of defense for personal dignity.
In some extreme cases, even a simple spreadsheet can turn into something deadly. During the UK Ministry of Defence’s evacuation effort in Afghanistan, a staff member mistakenly sent an Excel file that contained the personal data of more than 250 local helpers. The mistake caused international shock. After the data leaked, the Taliban were back in power. In that context, the file became like a ready-made “target list.” The people named in it faced the risk of revenge—and even death. As a result, the UK government was forced to start a costly, secret rescue operation. This tragedy is a strong reminder: in certain situations, a small cybersecurity mistake can cost people their dignity—and even their lives.
With cyber threats happening all the time, building better personal habits is one of the most effective ways to protect yourself. First, use different passwords for different accounts, and make them strong. A good tip is to combine three random words into a long phrase that’s hard to guess. And never reuse your home door code as an online password. Second, turn on two-factor authentication everywhere you can. It adds an extra layer of protection and helps stop someone from logging in with a stolen password. Finally, stay alert when you receive threatening or suspicious messages from unknown sources. Do not click links in text messages, and always verify information through official channels. In short, in today’s data-transparent world, “a little more doubt, a little less convenience” is a simple but essential rule for staying safe.
