Rumors Grow Over Zero Tariffs on U.S.-Made Cars, Ministry Says Impact Is Limited
Following reports that U.S.-made vehicles and auto parts may be subject to zero tariffs under a Taiwan–U.S.Tariff Agreement, the Ministry of Economic Affairs held a meeting with domestic automakers on February 11. The Minister of Economic Affairs said that even under the most extreme scenario, the impact on the automobile industry’s output value would be slightly above one percent, and the short-term impact would remain limited.
The Ministry of Economic Affairs has set aside NT$3 billion to help automakers upgrade and transform their operations and strengthen independent research and development capabilities. The ministry also stressed that the tariff measures have not yet been finalized, and that early communication with the industry is intended to prepare for future market competition.
Taipei House Prices Overtake Tokyo, Taiwanese Buyers Lead Japan Property Market
According to a survey by Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, Taiwanese buyers accounted for 32% of foreign purchases of newly built apartments in Tokyo’s 23 wards in 2024, ranking first among all nationalities, and the share rose to 62% in the first half of last year.
Sinyi Realty’s Japan division said that rising home prices in Taiwan, a weaker Japanese yen, and geopolitical risks are driving Taiwanese buyers to purchase property in Japan for both self-use and investment. Data from the Japan Real Estate Institute also showed that as of October last year, the price index for high-end housing in Taipei was clearly higher than that in Tokyo’s core districts.
United States Secretary of Commerce Admits Visiting Epstein’s Island, Faces Scrutiny
United States Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick admitted at a Senate Appropriations Committee Hearing that he visited the private island of the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein during a family vacation in 2012, contradicting his earlier claim that he cut off all contact with Epstein after 2005.
Democratic senators said Lutnick’s testimony may have misled Congress, and some Republican lawmakers also voiced concerns, but the White House said President Donald Trump continues to fully support Lutnick remaining in his post.
Employees’ Social Media Missteps Can Spark Public Relations Crises, Managers Must Learn Risk Control
Inappropriate posts by employees on social media, even on private accounts, can trigger serious public relations and legal risks for companies. Managers should clearly distinguish between official use, professional work-related use, personal use during work hours, and personal use after work, and should set clear written guidelines for each situation.
Companies also need to communicate social media policies clearly to all staff. The goal is to prevent information leaks and improper remarks. When necessary, managers should work closely with human resources and legal teams. Only by doing so can companies strike a balance between respecting employee privacy and protecting corporate reputation.
Escaping Boredom with Screens? Learning to Leave Space Regains Control
Many people today use their phones to fill spare moments, which leads to fragmented attention. Constantly seeking short term stimulation can also drain dopamine and deepen feelings of inner emptiness.
Waki, the founder of Reading Outpost, suggests consciously choosing boredom by replacing low-value entertainment with deep reading or regular exercise. On the social side, he recommends cutting back on formal social activities and focusing on deeper conversations. Through leaving space in daily life and practicing digital detox, people can regain focus and achieve a more stable and grounded sense of inner fulfillment.
