Taiwan-U.S. Trade Agreement Signed, Tariffs reduced to 15 percent

The Executive Yuan has completed the signing of the Agreement on Reciprocal Trade, confirming that reciprocal tariffs will be reduced to 15 percent without stacking, and that 2,072 Taiwan export items to the United States will be exempted. On Taiwan’s side, 27 agricultural products, including rice, chicken, and garlic, will maintain their original tariff rates. U.S. pork tariffs will be reduced over three years, U.S. beef will be partially opened, passenger cars will be lowered to zero tariffs, and small and medium trucks will maintain certain tariff rates.

The government stressed that food safety labeling rules and school meat regulations will remain unchanged, and plans to expand purchases of U.S. energy and equipment from last year through 2029 to balance industrial resilience and market competition.

New Taipei Junior High School Stabbing Case Finalized, Two Teenagers Sentenced to Twelve and Eleven Years

The junior high school stabbing case in New Taipei City has been finalized. The Supreme Court rejected the appeal and upheld the second-instance ruling, sentencing the male teenager surnamed Kuo to twelve years in prison and the female teenager surnamed Lin to eleven years. The case occurred on December 25, 2023, when Kuo used a switchblade knife to stab a male student surnamed Yang to death.

The second-instance court evaluated the provisions for sentence reduction for minors and the juvenile investigation report, and found the sentences appropriate. The Supreme Court held that the grounds for appeal were not legally valid and that the sentencing was not improper, thereby rejecting the appeal and rendering the ruling final.

A Foreign Policy U-turn? Taiwan Representative Office May Be Renamed "Taipei"

Lithuanian Prime Minister Ruginienė stated that she is considering renaming the existing “Taiwanese Representative Office” to the “Taipei Representative Office.” She believes that this move would not deny Lithuania’s support for democracy.

Currently, renaming the office still requires coordination with strategic partners, and neither government has officially discussed this issue. She thinks the original naming decision was too hasty, and future foreign policy should be guided by the actual interests of the country and its people.

Still Working at Eighty-One, Japan’s Senior Workforce Reshapes the Workplace

Japan’s senior workforce continues to grow, with the labor participation rate of men aged 65 and above reaching 35 percent in 2024, clearly higher than in Taiwan. Companies are adjusting working hours and job roles, and promoting reskilling and cross-company rotation systems to make better use of middle-aged and older workers.

Some service industry employees are even over seventy years old and still choose to work in order to maintain income and social connections. However, positions that require higher physical strength and technical skills still face labor shortages. As aging and artificial intelligence develop at the same time, younger generations should build trust and professional skills early to prepare for future changes in the workplace.

AI Reshapes the Future of Work! Human Machine Collaboration Matters More

The Wall Street Journal interviewed several workplace experts, who said that over the next two decades, AI will reshape the nature of work and the value of talent. Corporate management is expected to become highly data-driven, with AI used to analyze employee work rhythms and teamwork efficiency instead of traditional surveys.

As the labor force continues to shrink, organizations are placing greater emphasis on developing talent, with skills training becoming more important than academic credentials. As AI takes over execution work, leadership with strong emotional intelligence and the ability to work with machines will be essential. Workers who can learn across fields and continue to adapt will gain a stronger competitive advantage.

Let’s wrap up today’s episode. We’ve learned about some important events happening around the world.

  • Taiwan signed a reciprocal trade deal with the United States, cutting tariffs to 15 percent while keeping key farm protections and expanding U.S. purchases through 2029.

  • The Supreme Court finalized the New Taipei junior high school stabbing case, upholding prison sentences of twelve and eleven years for the two teenagers and ruling that the appeal lacked legal grounds.

  • The Lithuanian Prime Minister is considering renaming the “Taiwan Representative Office” to the “Taipei Representative Office” to better focus on her country’s actual interests.

  • Japan’s aging workforce is changing the job market, as companies adapt and younger workers prepare for future challenges.

  • Experts say AI is expected to transform work and talent value, driving data-based management and favoring skills, adaptability, and leaders who can work effectively with machines.

In the next episode, we will together explore the recent hot news with you in the morning. Don’t forget to come back. Have a nice day and hear me next time. Bye.
