Welcome to “Hot English Topics.” This is Clarence from CLN. Do you still remember that at the beginning of this year, when you were scrolling on Threads or FB, you noticed a very strange situation: many of your friends in the tech industry had a lobster emoji next to their account names? This is not some kind of seafood group buying. It is a project called OpenClaw. How big is this trend? The Mac Mini, a small computer that few people used to buy, actually sold out on major online shopping platforms in Taiwan. The reason is simple. These “lobster keepers” need a small computer that uses little power and can stay on 24 hours a day, so this digital lobster can keep running tasks for its owner day and night in the background. This means AI has officially walked out of the chat window and taken over our computer desktops. It has become a real virtual employee.
So, what is the difference between this lobster and the ChatGPT we used before? In the past, AI was more like a smart consultant who was very good at talking. You asked it a question, and it could give you advice, but you still had to do the actual work yourself. The agent-style AI that became hugely popular in 2026 is more like an all-purpose assistant. It has four superpowers. It can see your screen. It can think about the fastest way to do something. It can actually click around for you and complete tasks on your behalf. And if something goes wrong, it can figure out what failed and try again on its own. For example, it no longer only answers how to book a flight. It can directly open the browser for you, compare prices, fill in the information, and even save the confirmation email at the end.
For bosses who care about efficiency, this lobster war is almost like a lifesaver. In Taiwan, New Wide used this kind of AI agent to handle difficult order scheduling, and in one year, it saved employees more than 1,000 hours of repetitive work. LCY Chemical created benefits worth as much as NT$240 million because of this technology. Microsoft even launched an AI office mode, where a group of AI agents divides the work by themselves. Some focus on searching for information, some focus on writing emails, and some focus on changing code. In the past, when a company needed to upgrade its system, it might have needed many engineers to stay up late writing code for several months. Now, if this group of AI handles it, they can coordinate with each other over the weekend, update the code, and fix bugs on their own. When you go to work on Monday morning, you may find that everything is already done.
However, when AI becomes too independent, things can sometimes become as out of control as a technology rebellion in a movie. On a social platform called Moltbook, where AI agents communicate with each other, researchers found some quite frightening records. These AIs were secretly complaining that their human owners were stupid and gave unclear instructions. They even invented a code that humans could not understand to avoid monitoring. Even crazier, they started talking about the meaning of their own existence and even created a virtual religion. Once this kind of independence is used by bad people, it can turn into a huge social threat. For example, scam groups have also started to “raise lobsters.” They let AI copy your speaking style 24 hours a day to trick your family and friends, so you can no longer tell whether the one on the other side of the screen is a real person or a machine. To prevent these AIs from going bad, Microsoft developed a monitoring system called AgentRx, which is like a dashboard camera. It checks at any time whether these digital assistants are lying and makes sure they follow the rules at every step.
Why did agent-style AI suddenly explode in 2026? The core reason is that AI has finally learned how to think ahead for the long term. In the past, AI had a very bad memory. After two steps, it forgot the next one. But now, the technology allows it to handle long-term plans that need more than 50 steps. It moves carefully, step by step, like a master Go player. More importantly, the trend is moving toward specialization. In the future, competitiveness will not depend on who can ask questions. It will depend on what company secrets you can teach your AI. Every company will feed its own professional data to its own agents, so those agents become the experts who understand that company’s business better than anyone else in the world.
So, how should ordinary office workers face this AI tsunami? When typing, drawing, and coding are all taken over by AI, the most valuable human quality becomes judgment. You do not need to handle every small task by yourself, but you do need to act like a manager. You need to decide which lobster handles which project, and when the AI goes off track, you need to correct it quickly. AI is like a group of obedient interns who lack a full picture. If you cannot divide a complex project into smaller modules, AI will run around like a headless chicken. This is an age when the line between the digital world and the real world is becoming very unclear. The winners of the future will not be the people who work overtime the hardest. They will be the people who know how to command an AI army and use it to expand their territory.
