Shocking Twist in Lake Kawaguchi Murder Case! Victim's Husband Detained on Suspicion of Insurance Fraud

A Taiwanese woman was stabbed and killed by a fellow Taiwanese traveler at a hotel near Lake Kawaguchi, Japan, in mid-October. Tainan District Prosecutors Office have since uncovered evidence suggesting that the victim’s husband allegedly entered into a sham marriage with the victim, encouraged her to travel to Japan, and took out travel insurance on her life totaling NT$30 million. He is suspected of plotting her murder and attempting to collect the insurance payout.

The husband was arrested upon returning to Taiwan from Japan on October 24, and was ordered into detention by the court on October 26, but he has denied all charges. Prosecutors and police have obtained communication records between the husband, and the woman suspected of carrying out the stabbing. They are now investigating whether the two planned the murder in advance.

NT$20,000 Cash Handout? Premier Cho Jung-tai Says Increase Would Require Borrowing

Taiwanese Premier Cho Jung-tai presented the next year’s government budget to the Legislative Yuan on October 27, stating that both revenue and expenditure would total NT$3.9266 trillion, resulting in a balanced budget. The government plans to distribute NT$10,000 in cash to each person, but the opposition party is calling for the amount to be increased to NT$20,000, leading to disagreements.

KMT lawmakers argued that cutting the supplementary budget could provide enough funding for the increase. However, Cho Jung-tai stressed that the government must also consider other policy priorities and that distributing NT$20,000 per person would require additional borrowing. The two sides also debated the meaning of “zero borrowing,” with Cho Jung-tai clarifying that it refers only to next year’s government budget and does not mean the government has no existing debt.

Israeli Election Exit Polls Show No Clear Majority! Netanyahu Faces a Challenge

Israel held its parliamentary election on October 27. Initial exit polls projected that the opposition bloc would win 52 to 53 seats, slightly ahead of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s bloc with 50 seats. However, neither side reached the 61 seats needed for a majority in parliament. Netanyahu’s Likud Party is still expected to remain the largest single party.

Meanwhile, predominantly Arab parties are projected to win a combined 17 to 18 seats, potentially playing a key role in forming the next government. With no bloc securing a clear majority, who will lead the new government will depend on the final election results and negotiations between political parties.

Japan’s TSUTAYA Opens Its First Overseas Direct Store, Xinyi Bookstore Competition Heats Up

Japan’s TSUTAYA Bookstore opened its first directly operated overseas store at Songshan Cultural and Creative Park in Taipei on May 16. Unlike its previous stores, which were mostly franchised, the new store allows the company to directly manage store layouts, product selection, and service procedures. This also reflects the brand’s goal of bringing a more authentic Japanese bookstore experience to Taiwan.

With TSUTAYA joining the market, Xinyi District is now home to three major bookstore brands: Eslite, Books Bookstore, and Tsutaya. Today, physical bookstores compete on more than just their selection of books. They are also using exhibitions, shared spaces, and lifestyle products to attract more visitors and encourage them to stay longer. Finding ways to turn longer visits into actual spending has also become an important challenge for bookstore operators.

Does Living Abroad for Years Give You a Global Perspective? Building Cross-Cultural Trust Is Key

Many people associate having a global perspective with extensive overseas experience. However, developing a truly global mindset is not about how many places you have visited. It is about setting aside existing beliefs and prejudices, staying curious, and learning to understand and respect people for who they are.

In cross-cultural communication, simply being polite is not enough to build meaningful connections. People also need to take the initiative to reach out and engage with others. Developing a global perspective involves keeping track of personal experiences, reflecting on them, and using what you have learned to form your own views. Through ongoing interaction and empathy, people can build genuine trust across cultures.

Let’s wrap up today’s episode. We’ve learned about some important events happening around the world.

  • A Taiwanese woman’s death at Lake Kawaguchi has raised suspicions of an insurance fraud scheme involving her husband and another Taiwanese woman.

  • Taiwan’s proposed 2027 budget has sparked debate over cash handouts, as the government and opposition party disagree on how much to distribute.

  • Early exit polls suggest that neither major political bloc has won a majority, making coalition negotiations crucial to forming Israel’s next government.

  • TSUTAYA’s expansion into Taipei highlights growing competition among physical bookstores, which are focusing on customer experiences beyond books.

  • True international understanding grows through open-minded communication, personal reflection, and meaningful interactions with people from different cultures.

In the next episode, we will together explore the recent hot news with you in the morning. Don’t forget to come back. Have a nice day and hear me next time. Bye.
