Spain High-Speed Train Collision Kills at Least 68, Control Center's Decision Under Scrutiny
Two high-speed trains collided in Spain on October 28, killing at least 68 people and leaving 58 others injured and hospitalized. A computer failure had caused the railway safety system to stop working, bringing all trains in the affected area to a halt. However, the control center instructed one train to resume service without imposing a speed limit. It then crashed into another train that stopped ahead.
This was Spain’s second major high-speed train disaster this year. Another train collision in January killed 46 people, and the two accidents have raised concerns about railway safety. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announced three days of national mourning and promised a thorough investigation, as well as necessary support for the injured and the families of those who lost their lives.
Pakistan Reverses Airspace Restrictions, Restores Overflight Permission for Taiwanese Airlines
Pakistani officials recently said Taiwanese airlines would not be allowed to fly through the country’s airspace, citing its “One China” policy. However, just hours later, Pakistan reversed its position. On October 28, it approved China Airlines and EVA Air to fly through its airspace again, with permission valid until March 27, 2027.
Before the permission was restored, the restrictions had already forced both airlines to adjust some of their European flight routes. Since October 25, more than ten flights have been rerouted through Russian airspace. Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs also strongly condemned Pakistan for politicizing airspace access, criticizing the move as undermining Taiwan’s sovereignty.
Over 10,000 Civil Servants Leave Jobs in Taiwan Over Four Years, More Than Half Had Served Less Than Five Years
From 2022 to 2025, a total of 10,872 civil servants left their jobs in Taiwan, with more than half having served for less than five years. Last year, 3,170 civil servants left their positions, nearly double the number in 2019. The most commonly reported reason for leaving was finding another job, highlighting the challenge of retaining employees in the public sector.
Su Chun-jung, head of Taiwan’s Directorate-General of Personnel Administration, said declining birth rates and strong economic conditions in recent years have made government salaries less competitive, especially compared with the high-tech industry. The government has already increased professional and supervisory allowances and plans another pay raise next year. It is also considering anonymous exit surveys to better understand why civil servants are leaving.
No Budget for Raises? The Key to Retaining Talent Is Recognizing Good Performance
To retain talent, companies need to do more than offer pay raises. They also need to recognize employees’ contributions. Some companies give employees similar performance ratings and rewards in the name of fairness. However, this can make high performers feel that working harder makes little difference. Over time, they may become less motivated or even choose to leave.
Even with a limited budget, companies can adjust performance reviews and reward systems so that employees receive recognition that matches their contributions. Managers can also provide regular feedback, telling employees what they are doing well and what goals to work toward next. When good performance is recognized and employees have a clear direction for growth, they are more likely to see a future with the company.
Women Over 50 Take Center Stage in Fashion! Redefining Traditional Beauty Standards
In recent years, the fashion industry has been moving beyond traditional age limits, with women over 50 taking center stage on runways and in fashion campaigns. This growing trend is challenging beauty standards that have long focused on youth.
Beyond changing views on beauty, the strong purchasing power of older consumers has also encouraged fashion brands to pay more attention to this age group. Meanwhile, more female designers are taking on important roles in the industry and bringing their personal experiences into their work. As a result, the perspectives of older women are gaining greater recognition, gradually changing how the fashion industry views age and beauty.
