The PLA Eastern Theater Command announced the ‘Justice Mission 2025’ exercise on December 29, mobilizing all four branches of the military to blockade five areas surrounding Taiwan.
The exercises included sea-air patrols, port control, all-dimensional deterrence, and a 10 hour live-fire drill. China said the drills aimed to deter external military intervention and warn Taiwan independence forces. The Presidential Office called on China to stop provocations and said it would continue working with regional partners to uphold a rules-based international order and maintain Indo-Pacific peace and stability.

A magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck offshore Yilan late on December 27. The Central Weather Administration said the quake’s focal depth of 72.8 kilometers reduced the impact, causing no major casualties, but warned that aftershocks may still occur within the next week.
Chen Da-yi, head of the CWA Seismological Center, went viral after appearing at a press conference with messy hair and a crooked tie. Awakened by the earthquake late that night, he rushed straight to the CWA and prioritized repairing equipment over his appearance so the public could quickly understand the situation, a response that later drew praise from netizens for his professionalism.

In response to the Blue-White alliance blocking the NT$1.25 trillion special defense budget, Lai Ching-te said in a recent interview that he is willing to present a national policy report to the Legislative Yuan under constitutional procedures. However, he stressed that the question-and-answer format has been ruled unconstitutional and could cause constitutional disorder.
