Scams Spread as Convenience Stores Become the Front Line

Scams in Taiwan continue to worsen, and even after the Anti-Scam Laws has been in place for one and a half years, both the number of victims and total losses keep rising. Compared with banks, which have more mature anti-scam systems, convenience stores that people visit most often have become one of the most frequent locations for scam activities.

Convenience store operators say they are willing to fully cooperate with anti-scam efforts, but when money mules withdraw cash from ATMs, staff often hesitate to report to police due to concerns about personal safety. They are calling on the government to provide more resources and build faster and closer connections between convenience stores and police, so scams can be stopped more effectively and front-line workers can be better protected.

UN Faces Cash Crisis as U.S. Owes Most Dues

According to The New York Times, the United Nations has admitted it is facing a financial crisis. If member states do not pay their unpaid dues, the UN could run out of funds as early as July. The New York headquarters may be forced to shut down in August, and the September UN General Assembly could also be affected.

U.S. President Donald Trump, speaking to POLITICO in an interview on February 1, did not directly respond to whether the United States would pay the overdue fees. He said that as long as he personally reached out, other countries would be willing to contribute money. But UN officials pointed out that 95 percent of the unpaid dues currently come from the United States, and how the issue is resolved will continue to test international cooperation and the U.S. attitude.

Trust in the Ruling Party Rebounds as Cheng Li-wun Faces a Test of Public Opinion

According to the latest poll report from My Formosa, President Lai Ching-te’s public trust rating has risen to 46.9%. Premier Cho Jung-tai’s approval rating in January also exceeded his disapproval rating for the first time, marking a successful reversal and a “golden cross” in public opinion. Analysts believe this is mainly due to the progress in Taiwan-U.S. trade talks.

However, the distrust rating for KMT Chairwoman Cheng Li-wun surged by over 20 percentage points within just three months of her taking office. How the ruling and opposition parties adjust their strategies amid these shifts in public opinion will be a major test for both sides.

Harvard Professor Warns Excessive KPIs May Hurt Corporate Futures

A professor at Harvard Business School points out that when companies rely too heavily on short-term performance indicators, innovation can be suppressed, resources can be misallocated, and employees may be pushed to sacrifice organizational values just to meet targets, weakening long-term competitiveness.

Experts emphasize that performance management should not focus only on short-term numbers, and that companies must balance long-term strategy, organizational passion, and intrinsic motivation to support continuous innovation and steady growth.

Digital Dementia Concerns Challenged? Technology Strengthens Cognitive Health for Seniors

In the past, there were concerns that heavy technology use could cause digital dementia. However, recent research finds that adults aged 50 and older who regularly use digital tools have about a 58 percent lower risk of cognitive impairment, with benefits stronger than exercise or blood pressure control.

Experts explain that learning to use digital tools is a form of strong mental stimulation. It increases brain activity and also helps strengthen social connections and support daily functions, making it an important way for older adults to maintain cognitive abilities.

Let’s wrap up today’s episode. We’ve learned about some important events happening around the world.

  • As scams rise in Taiwan, convenience stores are becoming the front line and are calling for stronger support and closer police coordination.

  • The United Nations is facing a severe financial crisis and potential shutdown as U.S. President Donald Trump remains non-committal about paying the nation’s massive overdue dues.

  • Public trust in President Lai and his team has rebounded significantly, while KMT Chairwoman Cheng Li-wun faces a sharp rise in distrust within three months.

  • Overreliance on short-term KPIs can weaken long-term competitiveness, making it critical for companies to balance performance metrics with innovation, culture, and long-term strategy.

  • Research challenges digital dementia fears by showing cognitive benefits of technology use for seniors.

In the next episode, we will together explore the recent hot news with you in the morning. Don’t forget to come back. Have a nice day and hear me next time. Bye.
