BNT COVID-19 Vaccine Purchase Scam Costs Tzu Chi Foundation Over NT$1 Billion

The Ministry of Justice Investigation Bureau said that a lawyer surnamed Chen and others allegedly used the purchase of Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccines to defraud the Tzu Chi Foundation of more than NT$1 billion. The Taichung District Prosecutors Office indicted the suspects on August 6 and seized cash, gold, bank deposits, mansions, and other assets.

Tzu Chi said the foundation will fully cooperate with the judicial investigation and take necessary steps to protect donors’ rights. Tzu Chi also hopes that if the court finds the suspects guilty, the illegal proceeds can be returned to the foundation.

Uber Eats’ Pay for Batched Orders Ruled Illegal by The Ministry of Labor

After the Act for the Delivery Workers’ Rights Protection and Delivery Platform Management Act took effect, Uber Eats said delivery workers’ average hourly pay had increased. However, delivery workers’ unions questioned the claim, saying the platform divided the delivery time for batched orders, which caused workers’ actual pay to be underestimated.

The Ministry of Labor said Uber Eats did not include the full service time for each order when calculating basic pay, which violated the Food Delivery Act. If the Department of Labor confirms the violation, the company will be fined based on the number of affected workers, with a minimum fine of NT$20,000 for each case, and will be ordered to correct the problem within a set period.

Trump Again Limits Birthright Citizenship and Targets Birth Tourism

U.S. President Donald Trump signed two executive orders on August 6 to limit citizenship eligibility for some children born in the United States and to strengthen efforts against “birth tourism,” in which foreign nationals travel to the country mainly to give birth.

Trump said the new measures were introduced after the Supreme Court rejected an earlier executive order on the issue. However, the Supreme Court has already reaffirmed that the U.S. Constitution protects the right of most babies born in the United States to receive citizenship. As a result, the new measures may still face legal challenges before they can be fully carried out.

Lunch Box Market Booms as Convenience Stores and Food Companies Join the Competition

Taiwan’s lunch box market has grown rapidly in recent years. According to statistics, the number of lunch box and buffet shops in Taiwan exceeded 10,000 the year before last, while annual revenue surpassed 31.5 billion Taiwan dollars. The growth rate ranked first in the restaurant industry. In addition to traditional lunch box stores continuing to expand, convenience stores and food companies have also actively joined the competition.

President Chain Store Corporation said that sales of healthy light meal lunch boxes grew by nearly 30% last year. Meanwhile, Charoen Pokphand Enterprise expanded into the lunch box market and entered employee cafeterias at technology companies such as TSMC and Micron Technology. This shows that demand for healthy and convenient meals continues to drive growth in Taiwan’s lunch box business.

The Busier You Are, the Easier It Is to Make Poor Decisions! Do Not Let Stress Make You Short-Sighted

The tunnel vision means that when people lack time, money, or supportive relationships, they tend to focus only on the problem in front of them. Like being inside a tunnel, they cannot see the bigger picture, so they may make short-sighted decisions.

To break free from tunnel vision, we can reduce daily distractions, keep some extra space in our schedule or budget, and set reminders for important but non-urgent tasks. These steps can push us to change our situation even when we feel stuck inside the tunnel.

Let’s wrap up today’s episode. We’ve learned about some important events happening around the world.

  • A lawyer and others allegedly defrauded Tzu Chi of over NT$1 billion through the BNT COVID-19 vaccine purchase scheme, while the foundation seeks the return of the illegal proceeds.

  • Uber Eats’ pay system for batched orders was ruled illegal because it failed to count the full service time for each delivery, which may have caused workers to be underpaid.

  • Trump signed new orders to limit birthright citizenship and birth tourism, but the measures may still face legal challenges under the U.S. Constitution.

  • As demand for healthy and convenient meals continues to grow, Taiwan’s lunch box market is attracting more competition from convenience stores, food companies, and major brands.

  • The tunnel vision caused by resource scarcity narrows people’s perspective to immediate crises, but individuals can escape this trap by minimizing distractions, leaving buffers, and setting clear goals.

In the next episode, we will together explore the recent hot news with you in the morning. Don’t forget to come back. Have a nice day and hear me next time. Bye.
