Taiwan Wins Hosting Rights for Two Major Baseball Events, Giving Chinese Taipei a Home Advantage in Olympic Bid

The Chinese Taipei Baseball Association announced on August 13 that Taiwan will host the opening and super rounds of next year’s WBSC Premier 12, as well as the final baseball qualifier for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Taiwan will also host the Premier 12 super round at home again for the first time in 12 years.

Both events are important to Chinese Taipei’s chances of reaching the Los Angeles Olympics. The WBSC Premier 12 next year will offer only one Olympic spot for Asia. If Chinese Taipei finishes with the best result among Asian teams, it will earn an Olympic spot. If not, Chinese Taipei can still compete for the final place through the six-team final qualifier, where playing at home could provide an important advantage.

McDonald’s Shrimp Burgers Pulled After One Day Over Banned Antibiotic

McDonald’s Taiwan launched its new shrimp burger series on August 12, but later tests found nitrofuran and its metabolites in the imported shrimp patties. The products failed to meet food safety standards, so McDonald’s stopped selling the products nationwide and is continuing further testing.

Doctors said nitrofuran is a banned antibiotic. Long-term exposure may increase the risk of cancer and may also cause allergic reactions. McDonald’s said customers who bought the products on August 12 or in the early hours of August 13 can apply for a refund.

Trump Imposes Tariffs on Imported Drones, Taiwan Faces 15% Rate

U.S. President Donald Trump announced new tariffs on imported drones and drone components, saying the United States relies too heavily on foreign suppliers and that this could create national security risks. Some larger drones or drones with special functions will face a 100% tariff.

Drones and components from Taiwan, the European Union, Japan, and South Korea will face a 15% tariff, while smaller drones will face a 25% tariff. The U.S. government said the new tariffs are mainly aimed at strengthening the domestic drone industry and supply chain. Most of the measures will take effect 21 days after the proclamation is signed.

China Holds Over 80% of the Humanoid Robot Market, but Low Prices May Bring Losses

British bank Barclays said about 15,000 humanoid robots were installed worldwide last year, and China accounted for more than 85% of the total. China has rapidly increased production with its complete supply chain and strong government support. However, most robots are still used for greeting customers, giving performances, and doing low-value work.

Some humanoid robots cost about NT$460,000 to build, but their monthly rent is less than NT$10,000. Experts warn that if large-scale production grows without real market demand, this trend could turn into a costly industry bubble.

Is Living in the Moment the New Choice? Why Young People Are Becoming “Exquisite Poverty”

In recent years, many young consumers have shown signs of being in “exquisite poverty.” Even with limited savings, they are still willing to spend money on travel, luxury goods, and a higher-quality lifestyle. High housing prices, slow wage growth, and pressure from social media comparisons have also led some young people to think that since saving money still may not be enough to achieve goals like buying a home, they might as well enjoy the happiness they can have now.

Credit cards, installment plans, and buy-now-pay-later services have also made spending feel less painful. However, experts say there is nothing wrong with seeking a better quality of life. The key is to keep emergency savings, control debt, and avoid letting short-term enjoyment harm long-term financial security.

Let’s wrap up today’s episode. We’ve learned about some important events happening around the world.

  • Taiwan will host two key baseball events, giving Chinese Taipei a home advantage as it competes for a spot in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

  • McDonald’s Taiwan stopped selling its new shrimp burgers after a banned antibiotic was found in the shrimp patties, and affected customers can apply for a refund.

  • The United States will impose new tariffs on imported drones and components, including a 15% rate on products from Taiwan, to reduce reliance on foreign suppliers and strengthen the supply chain.

  • China dominates the global humanoid robot market, but low rental prices and weak real demand could turn rapid production growth into costly losses.

  • Many young consumers are choosing to spend on quality living despite limited savings, but experts warn that short-term enjoyment should not come at the cost of long-term financial security.

In the next episode, we will together explore the recent hot news with you in the morning. Don’t forget to come back. Have a nice day and hear me next time. Bye.
