Late-Night Fire at Zhinan Temple in Muzha Destroys 60-Year-Old Lingxiao Hall
A fire broke out at Lingxiao Hall of Zhinan Temple in Taipei’s Wenshan District on the evening of August 24. The fire burned for about three hours before it was fully put out, destroying the first and second floors. Fortunately, no one was injured. The fire department is now investigating the cause of the fire.
Zhinan Temple has a history of more than 100 years and is an important religious center in Muzha. Lingxiao Hall was completed in 1966 and had just reached its 60th year. Many local events were held at this site, which also holds shared memories for many residents. The Council member said they will seek resources to help rebuild it.
Nvidia and Supermicro Insiders Accused of Illegally Reselling 74 AI Servers to China
The Keelung District Prosecutors Office investigated the illegal export of high-end AI servers and found that employees from Nvidia, Supermicro, and other companies allegedly obtained the servers and shipped them through Indonesia and Japan. A total of 74 high-end AI servers equipped with Nvidia B300 chips were illegally sold to China, generating at least US$20 million in illegal profits.
Prosecutors said the suspects also allegedly provided false documents to avoid export and financial reviews. Another 56 servers were about to be exported to Japan in April when customs officials detected irregularities, exposing the case. Prosecutors later charged those involved with breach of trust, forgery, and other offenses.
Minimum Wage Keeps Rising, but Senior Workers May Lose Out
Taiwan’s minimum wage has increased for several years in a row. If it rises by another 5% next year, the monthly minimum wage will increase from the current NT$29,500 to more than NT$30,000. However, a job bank said that if companies only raise pay for new or low-paid workers, senior employees may not receive the same increase, creating a problem known as “pay compression.”
An August survey by the job bank found that more than 60% of workers are considering changing jobs, with low pay being the main reason. If salary increases fail to keep up with heavier workloads and rising prices, changing jobs may become a way for workers to seek higher pay. Companies can use bonuses or benefits to retain talent, while workers can reassess their skills and salary value.
Taiwan’s Economy Hits a New High, but Department Store Sales Lose Momentum
Taiwan’s economy grew by 8.63% last year, reaching a 15-year high. However, the total value of the retail industry fell by 0.2%. Department store sales increased by only 1.43%, and after inflation was taken into account, their real performance still showed negative growth.
Experts say most office workers did not clearly benefit from the stronger economy. At the same time, high-spending consumers chose to travel abroad, which reduced domestic purchasing power. Consumers also prefer shopping centers that combine dining, entertainment, and other experiences, putting traditional department stores under growing pressure to change.
Short Breaks Help Reboot the Brain! Taking Seven Vacations a Year Can Boost Happiness
Research shows that taking seven short vacations a year can reduce stress and depression risks by about 30%. When people step away from daily work routines, the brain lowers stress hormones and releases dopamine and serotonin, effectively improving sleep quality and focus.
Research also suggests that taking several short breaks throughout the year can relieve stress more effectively than taking one long vacation. People do not necessarily need to travel abroad or spend a lot of money. Even staying in another city for two nights can give the brain a sense of novelty and improve emotional resilience.
Let’s wrap up today’s episode. We’ve learned about some important events happening around the world.
A late-night fire destroyed the 60-year-old Lingxiao Hall at Zhinan Temple in Taipei, but no one was injured and rebuilding support is being sought.
Employees from Nvidia, Supermicro, and other companies are accused of illegally exporting high-end AI servers to China through third countries, generating at least US$20 million in illegal profits.
If the minimum wage rises but senior employees do not receive similar pay increases, it may lead to pay compression, while low pay could push more workers to consider changing jobs.
Taiwan’s economy grew strongly, but department stores struggled as many workers saw limited benefits and high-spending consumers shifted toward overseas travel and experience-based shopping centers.
Taking seven short vacations a year may lower stress and depression risks by about 30%, showing that regular breaks can help the brain recover and improve overall well-being.
In the next episode, we will together explore the recent hot news with you in the morning. Don’t forget to come back. Have a nice day and hear me next time. Bye.
