Sanae Takaichi Meets Trump for 35 Minutes, Japan Does Not Reveal Whether Taiwan Issue Was Discussed
Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi met with U.S. President Donald Trump in New York for about 35 minutes on September 23. With the U.S.-China summit taking place on September 24, the two leaders exchanged views on China-related issues and agreed to strengthen the U.S.-Japan alliance and economic security cooperation in areas such as AI, semiconductors, and critical minerals.
Japanese officials did not reveal whether the two leaders specifically discussed Taiwan. However, Japan is concerned that the U.S. and China may bypass Japan and reach agreements on advanced technology and rare earths, and is also watching whether the U.S. may make concessions to China on Taiwan in exchange for economic benefits.
Strong AI Demand Pushes Taiwan’s Export Orders Above US$100 Billion for the First Time
Taiwan’s Ministry of Economic Affairs said export orders reached US$102.96 billion in August, the highest monthly level on record. Orders rose 71.4% from a year earlier, marking the 19th straight month of growth, mainly driven by strong demand for AI and cloud services, which boosted orders for servers, semiconductors, and IC design.
The ministry had originally expected orders to pass US$100 billion in September, but demand for AI servers and chips was stronger than expected, pushing the milestone one month earlier. The ministry expects Taiwan’s full-year export orders to reach as much as US$1.1 trillion, setting another record high.
Taiwan’s AI Usage Rate Rises to 33.8%, Ranking 19th in the World
Microsoft’s latest report shows that Taiwan’s generative AI usage rate among the working-age population reached 33.8% in the second quarter of this year, up 2 percentage points from the first quarter, while its global ranking rose to 19th. Taiwan’s usage rate was not only higher than the global average of 18.8%, but also higher than those of the United States, Germany, and Italy.
However, there is still a clear gap in global AI development. The average AI usage rate in Global North countries reached 28.8%, compared with 16.2% in Global South countries. The report says that limited access to electricity, internet infrastructure, and digital skills make it harder for some countries to keep up with AI development, further widening the gap in the economic benefits brought by AI.
When Managers Start by Blaming, Teams Become Defensive Faster
The way managers ask questions can affect whether team members are willing to speak openly about real problems. If questions often sound like they are looking for someone to blame, employees may become defensive and less willing to raise risks or problems.
Instead of rushing to find someone to blame, managers can first ask what happened, what caused the problem, and what support is needed. When employees know their manager wants to solve the problem rather than find someone to blame, they are more willing to share different views and work together to find a solution.
Even 20 Million Visitors Can’t Save Taiwan’s Old Streets? A Copy-and-Paste Crisis Hides Behind the Crowds
Many of Taiwan’s old streets attract large numbers of tourists every year, and Lukang became the most popular this year with more than 20 million visitors. However, when shops sell products mainly to meet tourist demand, old streets may gradually lose their original character, and large crowds may also put pressure on residents’ living spaces.
Xinhua is bringing new life to its old district by restoring historic buildings and developing local industries. Qishan is protecting its local identity through banana culture, historical memories, and the return of young people. These examples show that old streets must keep local residents and industries in place while attracting tourists, or they may become similar tourist areas.
Let’s wrap up today’s episode. We’ve learned about some important events happening around the world.
Sanae Takaichi and Trump discussed China-related issues and stronger U.S.-Japan cooperation, while Japan remains concerned about possible U.S.-China deals and concessions on Taiwan.
Strong AI demand pushed Taiwan’s August export orders above US$100 billion for the first time, with full-year orders expected to reach as much as US$1.1 trillion.
Taiwan’s generative AI usage rate rose to 33.8%, ranking 19th globally, while the AI gap between Global North and Global South countries continues to widen.
A manager’s questions can either make employees defensive or encourage them to speak openly and help solve the real problem.
Taiwan’s old streets attract large crowds but face growing concerns over similar shops and pressure on local life.
In the next episode, we will together explore the recent hot news with you in the morning. Don’t forget to come back. Have a nice day and hear me next time. Bye.
