It was used to describe people born in the 1970s who entered their forties — a middle-aged generation different from the traditional one, sensitive to trends, and looking for a lifestyle that expresses themselves. They refuse to be limited by age, have stable financial abilities, pay attention to fashion, beauty, and trends, and maintain a youthful and curious mindset. However, since 2022, as memes spread on social media, the younger generation has labeled “Young Forty” with a mocking tag, meaning “middle-aged but trying hard to act young.” It started as a word praising middle-aged people for living an exciting life, but it has now become a symbol of generational conflict.

Why do young people mock the Young Forty? Behind it lies deep generational conflict. Young Koreans aged 15 to 29 face high unemployment, high housing prices, and a shrinking job market, suffering from structural lack of opportunities. When middle-aged people around forty show purchasing power and follow youth trends, young people do not see just “personal style choices,” but a clear “resource gap” — while young people struggle to survive, middle-aged people still have the ability to pursue image and taste, which increases the anxiety of the younger generation.

Besides structural lack of opportunities, another pressure young people feel comes from “cultural space being occupied.” When symbols originally belonging to youth culture, like sneakers and digital products, are widely adopted by middle-aged groups, young people may feel that their culture is being taken over, causing unease. Some young people even think that once the Young Forty start wearing brands like Supreme, Stüssy, or Hoka in large numbers, the “trendiness” of these brands will quickly drop.
