Welcome to “Hot English Topics.” Did you know that the number of registered dogs and cats in Taiwan has already surpassed the number of newborn babies, and the gap continues to widen each year? Taiwan currently has around 2.8 million pets, and the number is growing at an annual rate of about 10 percent. According to the statistics, by 2040, the number of pets is expected to reach as high as 12 million, and the domestic pet market is projected to generate NT$58 billion in annual output value, making it Taiwan’s next trillion dollar industry.

為甚麼毛小孩的數量愈來愈多?少子化、銀髮族及單身人士的增加,讓許多人將寵物視為朋友、家庭成員,加上疫情期間許多人因缺乏社交而開始飼養寵物,間接助長了寵物市場的蓬勃發展。而寵物的生活品質也變得越加重要,從日常用品到醫療保健,甚至旅遊和金融規劃,寵物經濟已成為近年最受關注的產業之一。(參考來源:Medium)

Why is the number of pets increasing so rapidly? Declining birth rates, an aging population, and a rise in single-person households have led many people to see pets as friends or family members. In addition, during the pandemic, many people began keeping pets due to a lack of social interaction, which indirectly fueled the rapid growth of the pet market. The quality of life for pets has become increasingly important; from daily necessities and medical care to travel and even financial planning, the pet economy has emerged as one of the most closely watched industries in recent years.

SEGMENT 2|全球與台灣寵物市場規模

先來看看整個市場的趨勢。根據彭博社的報告,全球寵物產業在未來十年將快速成長。2023 年市場規模已達 3,200 億美元,預計到 2030 年將邁向 5,000 億美元,其中又以亞太地區、拉丁美洲為成長最快的市場。台灣市場也不遑多讓,市場規模已突破 600 億台幣大關,展現穩定且具韌性的成長趨勢 (參考來源:經濟日報)。

Let us first look at the overall market trend. According to a Bloomberg report, the global pet industry is expected to grow rapidly over the next decade, with the market reaching US$320 billion in 2023 and projected to approach US$500 billion by 2030, led by the Asia-Pacific region and Latin America as the fastest-growing markets. Taiwan’s market is no exception, as its market size has already surpassed NT$60 billion, showing a steady and resilient growth trend.

SEGMENT 3|寵物過得比人類好?一窺寵物奢華生活 (上)

有些毛小孩的生活過得甚至比人類還奢華!首先介紹:寵物信託。目前全球身價最高的寵物非德國牧羊犬岡瑟六世莫屬。牠的財產來自一位伯爵夫人,其信託基金成長至今總共約 160 億台幣,可說是億萬富犬 (參考來源:BAZAAR)。

Some pets are living even more luxurious lives than humans! First, pet trusts. The world’s wealthiest pet is widely believed to be Gunther VI, a German shepherd whose fortune comes from a countess, with the trust fund growing to around NT$16 billion, earning him the title of a billionaire dog.

第二:寵物專屬豪華班機。Bark Air 是全球首家犬類專屬航空,每航班只販售十張寵物機票。座位寬敞,有香氛、音樂、迎賓大骨湯和點心,幫助毛小孩舒緩搭機的緊張,一位毛小孩加同行者單程價格約為台幣 20 至 25 萬元 (參考來源:BAZAAR)。

Second, luxury flights exclusively for pets. Bark Air is the world’s first airline designed specifically for dogs, with each flight selling only ten pet tickets. The cabin offers spacious seating, scents, music, and welcome bone broth and snacks to help pets ease travel anxiety, with a one-way ticket for one pet and one companion costing around NT$200,000 to NT$250,000.

SEGMENT 4|寵物過得比人類好?一窺寵物奢華生活 (下)

第三:生命紀念。不少飼主透過複製寵物、訂製骨灰鑽石,來紀念過世的毛孩。如美國影星Barbra Streisand 曾求助專業技術,以複製死去的愛犬,從提取細胞核,到發育成完整胚胎,花費台幣約 150 萬元。另外,認為毛小孩是獨一無二、無法複製的富有爸媽,則將其寵物骨灰訂製成鑽石,價格從台幣 5 萬到 75 萬元不等 (參考來源:BAZAAR)。

Third, life memorial services. Many pet owners choose to commemorate their deceased pets through pet cloning or custom-made diamond memorials created from cremation ashes. For example, American actress Barbra Streisand once turned to professional technology to clone her dog that passed away, a process that involved extracting the cell nucleus and developing it into a complete embryo, at a cost of about NT$1.5 million. Meanwhile, wealthy pet owners who believe their pets are unique and irreplaceable choose to turn their pets’ ashes into diamonds, with prices ranging from NT$50,000 to NT$750,000.

此外,奢侈品牌如 愛馬仕、迪奧、路易威登、古馳等,都相繼推出寵物牽繩、項圈、皮衣、禮服等產品,方便主人與毛孩搭配親子裝。這些新服務、新產品展示了寵物經濟的全方位成長,也讓人驚嘆毛孩們的生活竟能如此奢華 (參考來源:BAZAAR)。

In addition, luxury brands such as Hermès, Dior, Louis Vuitton, and Gucci have all launched pet leashes, collars, leather outfits, and formal wear, allowing owners to match outfits with their pets. These new services and products highlight the all-round growth of the pet economy and leave many people amazed at how luxurious pets’ lives have become.

SEGMENT 5|社會觀察與反思

隨著寵物數量與日俱增,許多毛孩的角色已從單純的陪伴動物,升級為家庭成員,甚至享有各種奢華待遇。

As the number of pets continues to rise, many of them have shifted from being simple companion animals to full-fledged family members, even enjoying various luxury treatments. 

寵物經濟的快速成長,不僅反映人們對寵物生活品質與情感連結的重視,也揭示了整體消費觀念的轉變。然而,這種高度消費化的趨勢,同時引發社會反思,例如資源分配是否合理、寵物真正的幸福該如何衡量,以及部分創新科技與服務所涉及的倫理議題。

The rapid growth of the pet economy not only reflects the increasing importance people place on pets’ quality of life and emotional bonds, but also reveals a broader shift in consumer values. However, this highly commercialized trend has also sparked social reflection, including questions about whether resources are being allocated fairly, how true happiness for pets should be measured, and the ethical issues involved in some emerging technologies and services.
