Welcome to “Hot English Topics.” This is Clarence from CLN. Recently, have you noticed gyms opening one after another on the streets, social media filled with discussions about weight-loss injections, popular Pilates classes requiring reservations months in advance, and even travel agencies offering marathon vacation packages? These small details in daily life actually reflect a rapidly rising industry—the global wellness economy.

The wellness industry not only includes traditional medical services but also covers beauty, fitness, travel, mental health, and technology. People today are seeking more than just longevity—they want a healthier and happier lifestyle, and this shift in consumption is reshaping the entire health market. According to a report by the Global Wellness Institute, the global wellness economy reached $6.8 trillion in 2024, becoming one of the most influential sectors in the world economy.

There are several key factors behind the rapid growth of the wellness economy. First, consumer behavior is changing: people no longer wait until they are sick before seeking medical care. They are willing to spend time and money improving their quality of life, such as through fitness, mental relaxation, and health supplements. Consumer spending on health has shifted from traditional medical expenses to prevention and lifestyle management.

Second, new technology is changing the way health services are delivered. From guided meditation apps to virtual fitness trainers to wearable devices like wristbands and rings, technology makes health management more convenient, immediate, and personalized.

Finally, changes in social structure are also a major driver. Many countries have aging populations, and Taiwan officially entered a super-aged society in 2025, meaning that one in five people is over 65. As aging and chronic diseases increase, the demand for medical care and wellness services continues to grow, becoming an important force driving the expansion of the wellness industry.

McKinsey & Company)

Millennials and Generation Z are also key drivers of the wellness industry transformation. According to a 2025 McKinsey survey, in the U.S., these two generations make up only 36% of the adult population but contribute more than 40% of annual healthcare spending. Compared with older adults, younger generations pay more attention to mental wellness, beauty care, nutrition, and fitness, and are more influenced by social media when buying health products. They purchase a wider range of health products and services, preferring non-essential items like fitness trackers, massage tools, and meditation apps, while older adults focus more on basic products such as painkillers and vitamins.

Although younger generations are more active in health investments, in aging markets of developed countries, older consumers still hold huge business potential. While attitudes toward health vary across generations, people across the age spectrum are increasingly purchasing health-related products and services, such as health trackers and wellness travel. This shows that health awareness is changing and gradually forming a new lifestyle.

The future wellness industry is entering a complete transformation, focusing not only on treating diseases but also on prevention, personalization, and technology-driven overall health management. On the technical side, artificial intelligence has shown accelerated breakthroughs in early disease detection, precise diagnosis, and drug development, shifting healthcare toward smart prevention and comprehensive care. At the same time, telemedicine and virtual hospitals continue to develop, aiming to provide patients with real-time monitoring and specialist care at home through online connections and wearable devices, greatly improving accessibility and convenience. In everyday life, several clear trends are emerging: hybrid cardio and Pilates classes, healing vacations and wellness travel, as well as nervous system therapies such as sound therapy and gentle yoga. These new approaches not only improve physical health but also support mental well-being and quality of life, forming a comprehensive and sustainable healthy lifestyle.

However, the wellness economy is not entirely positive. Expensive fitness classes, mental health services, and various health products may widen health gaps between different income groups. While technological health tools are convenient, privacy and reliability issues cannot be ignored. Wearable devices and AI health assistants collect large amounts of personal data, making information security especially important. In addition, an over-commercialized market may cause misleading claims. We need to consume health services rationally, choosing investments that truly add value instead of blindly following trends.

The wellness economy is not a short-term fad but a long-term trend that is changing people’s spending habits and lifestyles. When you go to a gym, join mental wellness activities, or plan a health-focused trip, these efforts are long-term investments in a healthy life.
