Income Concentration Surpasses the U.S.! TSMC’s Boom Masks Extreme Wealth Inequality

The global demand for AI has pushed up TSMC’s market value. Its employees earn an average annual salary of about NT$3.51 million, which is four times the national average. However, this wealth wave has not benefited the general public, and income concentration is now even more extreme than in the United States. Currently, the top 10 percent of wealthy people in Taiwan control nearly 50 percent of all income, making Taiwan one of the wealthy economies with the worst inequality.

Additionally, U.S. President Trump has requested that TSMC move its production to the United States. This could endanger 20 percent of Taiwan’s tax revenue and impact the national defense budget. If the problems of extreme wealth concentration and industry reliance are not solved, Taiwan’s future economic and political stability will face a difficult test.

Who Will Regulate Military AI? China and the U.S. Skip War Rules Declaration

REAIM was held in Spain, where about one-third of the participating nations agreed to sign a declaration to regulate the deployment of AI in warfare. However, the world’s two military powers, the United States and China, chose not to join. Due to tensions between the U.S. and its European allies, as well as the uncertain future of trans-Atlantic relations, some countries remained hesitant about the joint commitment.

Dutch Defense Minister stated that nations are stuck in a dilemma between competing in technology and establishing limits. It remains to be seen whether a broader consensus can be formed in the future regarding human responsibility for AI weapons and risk management.

Next-Level Evolution for TSMC’s Kumamoto Plant? C.C. Wei Meets with the Japanese Prime Minister

TSMC Chairman C.C. Wei met with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi on February 5th and showed her book to express respect for their shared semiconductor policies.

TSMC announced that it is evaluating an upgrade for its second Kumamoto plant to the advanced 3nm process, which would be the first of its kind in Japan. This investment will help Japan develop its AI industry, and both sides hope to strengthen global supply chain resilience through better infrastructure cooperation.

Gemini 3 Becomes a Leader in AI as Alphabet Returns to the Top

Alphabet regained global attention after it announced the test results of Gemini 3. Gemini 3 led major competitors in many benchmark tests, pushing Alphabet’s market value above 3.6 trillion US dollars and helping the company surpass Microsoft for the first time in seven years.

Google integrated other teams and sped up the use of AI in its search engine, which helped ease doubts about falling behind ChatGPT. However, the search-advertising model is now changing, and Google still needs to balance AI leadership with steady revenue.

Why Results Feel Disappointing? Counterfactual Thinking Takes Over

Psychology experts say that irritation caused by small daily situations such as slow lines is often linked to counterfactual thinking. When results do not meet expectations, people tend to compare reality with an imagined ideal outcome, creating a sense that things could have been better. This gap can then lead to self blame or anger toward others.

If people understand that some negative outcomes are due to chance or are unavoidable rather than caused by human mistakes, these emotional responses based on what should have happened can be reduced, helping to lower emotional strain.

Let’s wrap up today’s episode. We’ve learned about some important events happening around the world.

  • TSMC’s massive success is boosting Taiwan’s economy but also creating an extreme income gap compared to other wealthy nations.

  • While one-third of the nations signed a declaration to regulate AI in warfare, the absence of the US and China highlights the ongoing tension between military competition and responsible technology use.

  • TSMC is considering upgrading its second plant in Japan to 3nm technology, a move that would significantly boost Japan’s AI industry and economic security.

  • Alphabet’s strong Gemini 3 results boosted its market value to past Microsoft, as Google accelerates AI integration in search while facing challenges to its changing ad-business model.

  • Psychology experts explain that disappointment often comes from counterfactual thinking, which makes people compare real outcomes with imagined better ones.

In the next episode, we will together explore the recent hot news with you in the morning. Don’t forget to come back. Have a nice day and hear me next time. Bye.
