Taiwan Stocks Look Overheated, but FSC Say Fundamentals Still Matter

After Taiwan’s stock market rose above 42,000 points, outside observers began to question whether the market was becoming overheated and even facing bubble risks, as the Buffett Indicator moved close to 500%. Financial Supervisory Commission  Chairman Peng Jin-Lung said that the regulator’s main job is to keep the market fair, transparent, and efficient, and to take action when needed.

The FSC also stressed that Taiwan’s industries remain globally competitive, and the stock market is not without fundamental support. The commission added that the market will eventually return to fundamentals, while foreign capital flows and leverage risks will continue to be closely monitored.

U.S. Trade Court Rules 10% Tariff Illegal, Trump to Seek Alternative

The United States Court of International Trade ruled that Trump’s 10 percent blanket tariff on all imported goods lacked legal basis on May 7. The court also ordered the government to stop collecting the tariff from the plaintiffs and return the money already paid. Although importers can now apply for refunds, the process will be carried out in stages, and it is still unclear when full access will begin.

Trump blamed the loss on radical judges and said that he would push forward with tariff policy in another way. Earlier this year, the U.S. Supreme Court had already ruled that Trump’s earlier global tariffs were illegal, making this the second major legal setback for his tariff policy this year.

Oil Prices Push Up Cost of Living, and Inflation Could Worsen in May

Taiwan’s Directorate-General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics Executive Yuan said on May 7 that price growth in April became more obvious than before. The main reason was higher international oil prices, which pushed up fuel costs and air ticket prices. Transportation and communication saw the clearest increase, while eating out and vegetable prices also continued to rise.

However, fruit prices dropped by nearly 20 percent, which helped offset part of the overall increase. The agency expects that airfares in May will continue to reflect higher fuel costs and push inflation up a little more, but if the weather stays stable, overall prices should not fluctuate too sharply.

NTU Students Create Fan App, Reaching 30,000 Downloads in 30 Days

A startup team of National Taiwan University students launched a fan community app called “Kardomo.” The app integrates a fan calendar, discussion forums, and a photocard catalog to help fans track idol-related information in one place. The app has reached more than 30,000 downloads in less than six months after its launch.

The platform was originally planned as a trading marketplace for photocards. Later, the team changed its direction and turned it into a community platform that solves fans’ information anxiety. In the future, the team plans to analyze fan data to help concert organizers and entertainment agencies understand fan distribution and market demand.

When Pilgrimage Turns Chaotic? Litter and Traffic Disorder Spark Debate

This year’s Baishatun Mazu pilgrimage reached a record 460,000 participants. As crowds surged, issues such as accumulating trash, transport disruptions, and the careless disposal of blessed items and food along the route emerged, raising concerns among pilgrims and local residents.

The incidents suggest that the order once maintained by shared understanding is beginning to break down, as awareness of environmental responsibility has not kept pace with the growing crowds. However, some participants still volunteered to pick up trash and clean restrooms, while the temple called on people to observe basic etiquette and maintain order during the pilgrimage.

Let’s wrap up today’s episode. We’ve learned about some important events happening around the world.

  • Although Taiwan stocks are facing concerns about overheating, the FSC says the market still has support from strong industrial fundamentals and will continue to be monitored.

  • Trump’s tariff plan has been hit again by the courts, and although importers may seek refunds, Trump says he will still try to move forward by other means.

  • While rising oil prices lifted fuel and airfare costs in April, May inflation could face upward pressure despite relief from lower fruit prices and stable weather conditions.

  • NTU students created the fan app “Kardomo”, which reached over 30,000 downloads by building a community platform that gathers idol information and fan data.

  • This year’s Baishatun Mazu pilgrimage attracted a record 460,000 participants, but the surge in crowds also brought growing concerns over trash, traffic disorder, and public etiquette.

In the next episode, we will together explore the recent hot news with you in the morning. Don’t forget to come back. Have a nice day and hear me next time. Bye.
