Trump’s New Tariff Policy: 25% Tariffs on Japan and South Korea
On July 7, U.S. President Donald Trump said he plans to charge a 25% tariff on Japan and South Korea starting August 1. He warned that if other countries use retaliatory tariffs, the U.S. will respond with even higher tariffs. He also said Malaysia, Kazakhstan, South Africa, Laos, and Myanmar will face tariffs between 25% and 40%.
The news has raised fears of a global trade war, and major Wall Street indexes had their biggest drop in three weeks. Experts say the 25% tariff could hurt businesses and consumers and make global trade tensions worse.
China Activates W121 Route Without Agreement, Ministry of Foreign Affairs Strongly Criticizes
China’s Civil Aviation Administration announced on July 6 that it would activate the W121 connecting route of the M503 air corridor without consulting Taiwan. The Taiwan Affairs Office said this move could reduce flight delays and benefit people on both sides of the strait. However, since the M503 route was set up in 2015, its closeness to the Taipei Flight Information Region has raised concerns that activating this route would shorten Taiwan’s air defense warning time.
Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs strongly condemned China’s actions, calling them authoritarian, and said they increase instability in the Taiwan Strait. The Ministry urged the international community to pay attention to this issue.
Legislators Push for News Bargaining Draft to Solve Media Industry Issues
Media companies mainly rely on news traffic to earn advertising revenue. However, in recent years, platforms like Google and Meta have been using news content for free, making huge profits and causing concerns about exploitation. To address this, legislators from all parties have proposed the “News Bargaining Draft,” which was sent to the Transportation Committee for review on July 8.
The proposal highlights two key points: “news has value” and “employer responsibility.” It aims to let news organizations negotiate with digital platforms and improve working conditions for media workers, hoping to create a better media environment.
America First Policy? TSMC Delays Second Kumamoto Fab Construction
Reports say TSMC’s Second Kumamoto Semiconductor Fabrication Plant, originally planned to start construction in the first quarter of this year, has been delayed to “sometime in 2025.” TSMC Chairman C.C. Wei said in June the delay was due to transportation issues. However, The Wall Street Journal reported the delay is linked to U.S. tariffs under the Trump administration, showing TSMC is prioritizing investment in its U.S. factories.
TSMC responded that its U.S. investment plans will not affect current investments in other regions and confirmed its global development plan.
France Holds First “Taiwan Day” Fair, Showcasing Taiwan’s Charm
On July 5, the French Taiwanese Chamber of Commerce hosted the first “Taiwan Day” fair in Levallois, Paris, attracting many visitors. The event featured Taiwanese food and live music, showing the charm of Taiwan’s culture.
Mayor of Levallois, Agnes Pottier-Dumas, said that hosting the Taiwan team during last year’s Paris Olympics was a great experience that allowed her to discover Taiwan’s unique culture. She believes this event successfully helped more French people learn about Taiwan and hopes for more similar events in the future.
Let’s wrap up today’s episode. We’ve learned about some important events happening around the world.
President Trump announced a 25% tariff on Japan and South Korea starting August 1, raising fears of a trade war and impacting U.S. markets.
China activated the W121 air route near Taiwan without agreement, leading Taiwan to criticize the move for increasing risks in the Taiwan Strait.
Legislators proposed a draft to help news companies get paid by digital platforms and improve working conditions for media workers.
TSMC delayed building its second Kumamoto factory to “sometime in 2025,” with reports saying U.S. tariffs influenced the decision.
The first “Taiwan Day” fair in Paris showed Taiwan’s food and culture, helping more people learn about Taiwan.
