Clashes Erupt in Strait of Hormuz, U.S. Sinks Iranian Boats
The United States launched an escort operation in the Strait of Hormuz on May 4, but soon clashed with Iran. U.S. officials said Iran fired missiles and used drones to attack commercial ships. All attacks were intercepted, and seven Iranian boats were sunk.
On the same day, a South Korean cargo ship exploded and caught fire near the strait, but no casualties were reported. Iran denied that any ships had safely passed through the strait and warned that it would take action against vessels that violate its rules.
UAE Attacked, U.S.-Iran Ceasefire Outlook Uncertain
The United Arab Emirates was hit by missile and drone attacks, raising regional tensions. The UAE said the attacks pose a threat to national security and stability, and reported damage to energy facilities and residential areas, with several people injured.
Oil prices rose due to the conflict, and markets are concerned about the situation in the Middle East. U.S. President Donald Trump, in an interview on the same day, did not directly respond to whether the U.S.-Iran ceasefire is still valid. This has led observers to believe that the conflict may make the ceasefire outlook more uncertain.
Rat Sightings Raise Concern in Taipei, City Plans Stronger Control Measures
Rats have been seen in many parts of Taipei, raising public concern about the environment and disease prevention. Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an said the city has held cross-department meetings and will introduce more specific control measures. Local leaders also said some areas may have rat problems due to improper feeding of birds.
Taipei and New Taipei have recently reported Hantavirus cases. Doctors warned that people may still get infected through the environment even without direct contact with rats. The Department of Environmental Protection said the number of reports has not increased significantly and will continue to strengthen cleaning and control efforts.

New Trends in the Service Industry, AI Assistant Managers Go Online
Taiwan’s service industry is facing the dual challenges of labor shortages and the wave of AI this year. Companies are beginning to introduce self-ordering systems, delivery robots, and AI assistant managers to improve efficiency and reduce labor pressure. Industry observers say that many brands are also actively expanding into Southeast Asia and the Middle East, accelerating their real overseas expansion through directly operated stores.
Experts say future competition in the service industry will not only focus on price, but will also combine technology, brand design, and the fan economy to build more differentiated business models.

Japan Went Crazy for “Rou Hei Rou Hei”? A Snack Many Taiwanese Grew Up With
The classic Taiwanese snack Nei Nei Supply Station recently went viral after a Japanese tourist in Taiwan mentioned a snack called “Ro He Ro He.” Taiwanese friends were initially confused until they saw the familiar package in a supermarket and realized the tourist had rewritten the Zhuyin spelling on the package in hiragana, leading to a funny misunderstanding.
First launched in the 1990s, the snack has long been loved for its rich milky flavor and has grown up with many Taiwanese consumers. This playful misunderstanding not only brought back childhood memories for people in Taiwan, but also introduced foreign visitors to local snack culture and unexpectedly drew international attention.
