Unions Accuse Uber of Ignoring the Law, Motorcycle Taxi Trial Begins in Beitou

On July 1, Uber launched a one month short-distance cultural experience project in Beitou, offering free motorcycle rides within a designated area. The program includes driver record checks, helmets with disposable liners, identity verification, and route deviation detection to help ensure rider safety.

Taxi and delivery driver associations criticized the program, saying it violates current regulations. They called on the Taipei City Government to stop the program and urged the Ministry of Economic Affairs to consider revoking Uber’s investment approval. The associations also warned that if an accident occurs during a motorcycle ride, drivers could face limited insurance coverage, large compensation claims, and criminal charges.

Facing Workplace Bullying? New Rules Let Former Employees File Complaints

Taiwan’s Ministry of Labor introduced new workplace bullying prevention rules on July 1. Workplace bullying is defined as repeatedly abusing or threatening workers by misusing a position of authority and going beyond reasonable limits, causing physical or psychological harm. Employers must establish complaint procedures, and they cannot refuse to accept complaints filed within the legal time limit, even if the worker has already left the company.

After receiving a complaint, employers must report the case to the Ministry of Labor and begin an investigation, completing the investigation and making a decision within the required time. If workers disagree with the result, they can request a review within 30 days. If new evidence is found, the investigation must be reopened to improve how workplace bullying cases are handled.

Court Blocks Birthright Citizenship Order, Trump's Immigration Policy Suffers a Setback

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in a 6-3 decision against Trump’s executive order to limit birthright citizenship. The Court said that under the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, people born in the United States automatically become U.S. citizens, and this right cannot be taken away.

Trump later called on Congress to pass a law banning birthright citizenship. However, experts say it is almost impossible today to change this right by amending the Constitution. The ruling is a major setback for Trump’s anti-immigration policy and marks his third major defeat at the Supreme Court during his current term.

How to Protect Yourself When Workplace Priorities Change

Workplace resources and responsibilities often change as company strategies evolve. Experts said that when employees receive more resources, they should focus on achieving short-term goals and understand that these opportunities reflect organizational needs rather than personal favoritism.

When resources are reduced or responsibilities are adjusted, employees should not automatically see it as a negative evaluation. Employees should actively look for new opportunities and understand what the company values most. Those who continue to deliver results are often better able to stay competitive during periods of workplace change.

Perfection Creates Distance! Making Mistakes Can Boost Friendliness

Speaking or performing too perfectly can sometimes make people feel distant from you. According to the “pratfall effect” in psychology, highly capable people may become more approachable when they make small mistakes.

This is because small flaws can show a more honest and human side. They can also make others feel less pressure. In the workplace, you do not always need to chase perfection. Showing a little imperfection at the right time may actually help bring people closer.

Let’s wrap up today’s episode. We’ve learned about some important events happening around the world.

  • Uber has launched a free motorcycle ride trial in Taipei’s Beitou District, drawing criticism from driver unions over legal and safety concerns.

  • Taiwan has introduced new rules to prevent workplace bullying, requiring employers to handle complaints and reopen investigations when new evidence appears.

  • The U.S. Supreme Court ruled against Trump’s birthright citizenship order, reinforcing constitutional protections for people born in the United States.

  • Employees who stay focused on company priorities, adapt to changing responsibilities, and continue delivering results are more likely to succeed during workplace changes.

  • The pratfall effect shows that capable people can seem more approachable when small mistakes reveal their honest and human side.

In the next episode, we will together explore the recent hot news with you in the morning. Don’t forget to come back. Have a nice day and hear me next time. Bye.
