Trump Tightens Immigration Policies! U.S. Immigrant Visas for Taiwanese Drop 67%

The New York Times reports that the Trump administration has sharply tightened immigration policies. The number of U.S. immigrant visas issued in February this year fell to 26,000, down from a previous monthly average of 52,000. Taiwan was also affected, with the number dropping from a monthly average of 180 to just 60, a decrease of about 67%.

Africa and the Middle East were hit especially hard, while student and work visas also fell by around 30%. Trump said the new measures were meant to strengthen security checks. However, federal courts have blocked some of the restrictions, and many applicants are still waiting for their visas.

Japan Allows "Taiwan" on Professional Licenses, Bringing Long-Awaited Recognition to Taiwanese Residents

Starting October 1 this year, Japan has allowed Taiwanese professionals, including doctors, lawyers, and beauticians, to list “Taiwan” as their nationality on their professional licenses. In the past, some Taiwanese people could only be listed as “China” on their licenses, causing frustration for many Taiwanese working in Japan.

Following efforts by Japanese diet members, around 90 types of professional licenses that previously required nationality information have been changed to allow “Taiwan” or remove the nationality field entirely. Taiwanese doctors working in Japan said the change has solved a problem that troubled them for decades and brought greater respect for their Taiwanese identity.

Trump Open to Trilateral Meeting with Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin, Nuclear Issues in Focus

U.S. President Donald Trump said on October 19 that he would be willing to hold a trilateral meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin if Xi is interested. The meeting could focus on nuclear weapons and ways to reduce their numbers.

The Kremlin said the three leaders might meet in November during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Shenzhen, China. Foreign media also reported that Putin had previously suggested using a trilateral meeting to discuss how to end the war between Russia and Ukraine. However, the summit has not yet been officially confirmed.

Too Nice to Employees? Managers May Need Clearer Boundaries

Managers do not always need to use strict authority with younger employees, but being too forgiving can also cause problems. A former HR manager shared that when managers keep taking responsibility for employees without setting clear expectations, workers may eventually take that support for granted.

Therefore, management cannot rely on understanding alone. Rules, responsibilities, and rewards also need to be clearly defined, and managers themselves should lead by example. When good performance is recognized and areas for improvement are clearly pointed out, employees can better understand what is expected of them, while managers can avoid letting personal relationships affect their decisions.

Struggling to Remember What You Learn? Two Brain Modes May Hold the Key

Using effective learning strategies can help improve memory and make learning more efficient. The brain switches between two modes: focused and diffuse thinking. Taking breaks and getting enough sleep after periods of focused study, along with reviewing information at regular intervals, actively recalling what you’ve learned, and using visual aids, can help connect ideas and strengthen memory.

To gain a deeper understanding, learners can turn abstract ideas into concrete examples, explain concepts to others, or apply what they’ve learned in different areas. When facing learning difficulties, it’s important not to get discouraged if you don’t understand something right away. With continued, focused practice, you can gradually build a stronger foundation for learning.

Let’s wrap up today’s episode. We’ve learned about some important events happening around the world.

  • The Trump administration’s tighter immigration policies have cut U.S. immigrant visa approvals by half, including a 67% drop for Taiwan, while some restrictions face legal challenges.

  • Japan now allows “Taiwan” on around 90 types of professional licenses, ending decades of frustration for Taiwanese professionals.

  • Trump expressed interest in a trilateral meeting with Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin to discuss nuclear disarmament and potentially ending the war in Ukraine, but the meeting has not been confirmed.

  • Good management is not about being harsh, but about setting clear expectations, responsibilities, and boundaries for employees.

  • Switching between focused and diffuse thinking, along with regular review and practice, can make learning more effective.

In the next episode, we will together explore the recent hot news with you in the morning. Don’t forget to come back. Have a nice day and hear me next time. Bye.
