Welcome to “Hot English Topics.” Today, we are talking about “side hustles.” After spending some time in the workplace, many people start to worry that if they lose this one and only salary, their life could fall apart. For middle-aged workers, side hustles are not just about making money; they provide extra income and offer protection when unexpected things happen.

On the other hand, Gen Z is leading a wave of “side stacking.” They are not only chasing income, but also using side hustles to explore their interests, build skills, and gain more control over their lives. Today, starting from the different ways middle-aged people and younger generations think about side hustles, we will look at how side hustles are becoming both a financial safety net and a life strategy for modern people.

Have you ever felt this way? Your job is quite stable, your salary arrives on time, and you sit in a decent position day after day. But if your only source of income is this one job, it is like walking on a tightrope high in the air—the real fear is not whether you will fall, but that when you do, there is not even a safety net to catch you.

After forty, many people’s anxiety does not come from a lack of ability, but from relying too much on a single role. They may need to support their parents, take care of their children, and also carry the pressure of a home loan or car loan. At the same time, age stereotypes in the workplace make changing jobs even harder. This is why side hustles for middle-aged people are no longer just an option, but a safety net: they do not have to affect the main job, the cost of failure is not high, and they can provide extra income, giving people more protection when facing uncertainty.

Besides middle-aged people treating side hustles as a safety net, Gen Z is taking them in new directions. They like “side stacking,” which means running several side hustles at the same time in addition to a full-time job to increase income sources. According to The Harris Poll, about 57% of Gen Z in the United States have at least one side hustle, more than any other generation.

Gen Z sees side hustles as a strategy. Besides their nine-to-five jobs, they also run other side hustles, and some people even make several times more than their main income. They share skills with each other and encourage entrepreneurship, viewing side hustles as a way to pursue freedom, build skills, and create multiple income streams. For example, some people work as full-time sales professionals during the day, trade cryptocurrency at night, and serve as volunteer firefighters on weekends—this is a typical case of side stacking.

Side stacking is not only about making money; it is also gradually becoming a modern version of a career safety net. Career expert, Amanda Augustine, points out that Gen Z is no longer climbing a single corporate ladder, but instead using multiple income sources to deal with unpredictable global economic changes, spreading their skills and income to gain more financial control and life stability.

Looking ahead to 2026, Tim Fung, CEO of the Australian gig platform Airtasker, predicts that side hustles will become a mainstream form of financial planning. They will be included in household budgets, turn skills into income to build parallel income streams, and form gig portfolios, transforming side hustles into long-term financial and career assets.

Side hustles come in many forms, and here we introduce three common types. Let’s take a look at the benefits and challenges of different side hustle models.

The first type is extending your main professional skills. For example, in addition to their main job, video editors can take on small freelance projects after work and turn their skills into smaller paid services. The advantage is fast cash flow and no need to learn new skills; however, it is important not to cross company boundaries or violate non-compete agreements.

The second type is interest-based side hustles. For instance, if you love sports and already have a background in fitness, you can get certified and work as a fitness trainer or yoga instructor in your free time.If you enjoy knitting, drawing, or baking, you can also start a small brand and sell your creations. The attraction of interest-based side hustles is turning happiness into income, but they may also change the nature of your original hobbies.

The third type is digital content side hustles. Writing articles, recording courses, and running social media channels are all examples. For example, teachers can upload their lessons to online platforms after class. At the beginning, they may only have a few students, but after several years, they may gradually build stable passive income. These side hustles have low costs and low barriers, but almost no returns in the early stage, which makes it easy to give up halfway; however, if you keep going, there is a chance to slowly build a stable income.

However, when talking about side hustles, we still have to face reality. Before starting one, people need to think carefully: Does the company allow it? Will it affect the main job? And what is the time cost—does it mean giving up time with family and friends or proper rest? Are you gaining income, or losing quality of life? In addition, side hustles are also a test of endurance. If there are no clear results after three to five years, can you still hold on?

The way to start a side hustle is to begin small, become stable, and then slowly improve the model and build income. Whether it is a safety net for middle-aged people or Gen Z’s side stacking, side hustles are not only income sources, but also life strategies. Finding a method that suits you can protect your finances while improving autonomy and growth, helping you stay strong in an era of constant change.
