Welcome to “Hot English Topics.” I’m Clarence from CLN. When people hear the word gambling, they often think of Macau casinos, underground betting, or fraud cases. However, many everyday activities follow the same pattern. Playing mahjong with family during the New Year, using data to follow investment trends, or repeatedly drawing cards in mobile games may look different, but they all focus on the excitement of uncertainty and anticipation. This cannot be explained by greed alone. In this episode, we will explore gambling psychology and how the brain responds, and discuss how to recognize addiction risks and bring life back on track.

For many people, the appeal of gambling is not about winning money. Psychology research shows that people keep betting because of three needs: one, excitement, two, a sense of control, and three, a temporary escape from reality. The uncertainty of outcomes makes each bet feel like a new start, which people are willing to pay for. Many gamblers believe they are not just relying on luck, but on intuition, experience, or certain methods, such as choosing lucky numbers or changing how they bet. This creates a feeling of control. Even when they know the odds are against them, they still think this time will be different. For some, gambling also becomes a brief way to escape pressure and step away from real-life stress and isolation.

With closer observation, we can see that at this stage, behavior is no longer guided by willpower. Instead, the brain quietly takes control. First, the brain is very sensitive to sudden changes. Waiting for results increases tension and anticipation, and outcomes that exceed expectations are more easily remembered, making people want to repeat the experience. Next, when rewards appear at unpredictable times with uncertain results, the brain cannot tell when to stop and keeps waiting for the next outcome. Third is the effect of almost winning. Even when a person loses, being close to success makes the brain react as if it were a real win, creating the feeling that success is very close. When these mechanisms work together, people are pushed forward without noticing, and it becomes harder to step away.

In recent years, gambling has taken new forms. With the rise of prediction markets, people can now bet on elections, sports events, and major public outcomes. In 2024 alone, trading volume for major events on Polymarket, the world’s largest prediction platform, exceeded 2 billion US dollars, and mainstream platforms also joined in. Using charts, polling data, and news analysis, these platforms make users feel they can understand the market and believe that more information means better chances. Even losses are often seen as normal investment risk. When everything is given a price, news and social media updates turn phones into constant sources of anxiety, triggering betting urges. This reflects a compensatory behavior, where people spend money to feel secure and regain a sense of control in an uncertain world.

The cost of gambling addiction often starts with small problems that slowly grow bigger. At first, financial pressure increases, and people begin to hide their spending from family members, which damages trust with partners or friends. As betting amounts rise, debts can quickly reach millions, and some even lose their homes, forcing their families to face major life changes. When money runs out, some people take risky actions such as fraud or embezzlement, leading to the loss of jobs and social trust. What begins as a personal problem can eventually affect many others. Studies also show that more than 60 percent of problem gamblers experience two or more psychological issues during their lifetime. When emotional and financial pressure becomes unbearable, some may even develop suicidal thoughts.

To regain control of life, the first step is often being honest with yourself. You can start by asking whether you have begun hiding gambling money from your family, or if you need to place larger bets just to feel excitement. This often shows that the brain’s ability to stop has weakened, and gambling may be used to escape stress. Instead of thinking about how to recover losses, it is important to recognize that this is not something controlled by effort or luck alone. Set clear limits for yourself, and if you find it hard to stop, actively seek professional help. By bringing your attention back to real life, you can slowly rebuild a sense of stability and security.
