Welcome to “Hot English Topics”. Have you noticed that restaurants and bars now often have a whole page of non-alcoholic drinks on the menu? In the past, alcohol was almost always part of social gatherings. But now, more and more people are choosing mocktails, or even not drinking at all during an entire event. This global trend is called Sober Curious. It means people are starting to rethink drinking and no longer see it as a necessary part of socializing. Today, we’re going to talk about why this trend is happening and how it is changing our lives and business models.

The term Sober Curious was introduced by British writer Ruby Warrington in her 2019 book. At its core, it does not ask people to stop drinking completely. Instead, it invites people to think about the role alcohol plays in their lives. Simply put, it is a more mindful way of drinking. You do not have to become someone who never drinks. You simply start asking yourself: Why do I drink? Is it to relax? To socialize? Or is it just a habit, or even social pressure? Unlike traditional sobriety, Sober Curious focuses more on flexibility and freedom. You might choose not to drink on weekends, order a non-alcoholic drink in certain situations, or simply drink less from time to time. Because of this openness, the idea quickly became popular on social media. From 30-day no-alcohol challenges to posts about stylish non-alcoholic drinks, younger people have started to see being sober as a new lifestyle—a way of living that feels clearer, more real, and more in control.

Why are more and more people choosing not to drink? There are several key reasons. First, health awareness is growing. There is even a popular term now: hangxiety, which means the physical discomfort and mental anxiety people feel after drinking. Alcohol can affect sleep and mood, and it can even raise the risk of heart disease. For young people who care about both physical and mental health, staying sober feels like a better way to live. According to a 2020 study published in The Journal of the American Medical Association, not drinking is becoming more common among Generation Z. In 2002, 20 percent of the college students in the study said they did not drink alcohol. By 2018, that number had risen to 28 percent. This shows that younger people are drinking much less than earlier generations.

Second, social habits are changing. Instead of drinking in noisy bars, many young people now prefer deeper conversations in places like cafés, craft classes, or outdoor spaces. For them, talking while sober feels like a better-quality social experience.

Third, there are simply more choices now. The market now offers many non-alcoholic and low-alcohol drinks, which makes not drinking feel more natural and easier to accept in social settings. At the same time, functional drinks are becoming more popular. These drinks focus on relaxation, energy, or nutrition, so they are not just replacing alcohol. They are becoming a more meaningful lifestyle choice.

As sober socializing becomes a trend, it is also creating major business opportunities. By 2025, the global non-alcoholic beverage market had already grown to nearly US$940 billion, and it is expected to keep growing. This shows that demand for non-alcoholic and low-alcohol drinks is rising quickly. More international breweries and beverage brands are entering the market and launching non-alcoholic beers and similar products. Brands like Heineken and Asahi have already introduced 0.0% product lines, showing how fast this trend is growing.

At the same time, restaurants and bars are becoming much better at designing non-alcoholic drinks. Many now use tea, fruit, spices, sparkling elements, or fermentation to create richer flavors. This allows non-alcoholic drinks to become flavorful and memorable choices for group dinners, food pairings, and social occasions.

Will socializing still need alcohol in the future? Looking at current trends, younger people are drinking less, and more people are starting to value real connection and self-control while staying sober. This means that alcohol is no longer a necessary part of socializing. It is simply one option among many. The rise of non-alcoholic bars and functional drinks is making social life more diverse and flexible. So maybe the real question in the future is not, “Should I drink or not?” but, “What kind of state do I want to be in when I face the world?” When staying sober becomes a form of self-care, and even a kind of personal style, drinking alcohol may slowly become the choice of a smaller group of people.
