Welcome to “Hot English Topics.” In the past, luxury often brought to mind designer bags and clothing covered in large brand logos. But in recent years, a different style known as “Quiet Luxury” has been gaining popularity. It first emerged among the upper class and in the fashion world. Instead of relying on flashy logos to signal wealth, it focuses on high-quality materials, expert tailoring, and fine craftsmanship—qualities whose value is clear only to those in the know. As more people grow tired of information overload, fast fashion, and overconsumption, they are embracing the Quiet Luxury lifestyle and choosing to spend on comfort and quality. Today, this trend has moved beyond fashion and is also changing the way people think about travel.
Many people used to plan trips around projecting the perfect image on social media. Fancy meals, luxury hotels, and famous attractions all had to be included. With packed schedules full of photo ops and check-ins, vacation ended up feeling more exhausting than work. Tired of constantly trying to impress others, people today care more about whether they have truly had time to rest and recharge.
As a result, some hotels and resorts now offer specialized programs that help guests recover both physically and mentally. These may include cryotherapy, hyperbaric oxygen therapy, and red light therapy, along with nature-based treatments, using a more scientific approach to improve physical well-being. But even when the body begins to relax, a single work notification can quickly pull the mind back into work mode, making it hard to fully switch off. In response, some resorts go so far as to set up digital detox areas with no Wi-Fi, temporarily hold guests’ phones, and remove televisions from rooms. The aim is to block out external noise and distractions, because having control over your time and being able to disconnect without worry has become a luxury in itself. Many international luxury hotels are also introducing sleep-focused rooms with soundproof spaces and smart mattresses, helping guests fall asleep more easily and improve their sleep quality.
For travelers who want to leave the crowds behind, remote places with fewer visitors can be especially appealing. Some hotels and resorts are set deep in the mountains, in the desert, on remote islands, or in globally certified dark sky areas, far from busy tourist spots. They may limit the number of guests or even host just one private group at a time, creating a quiet and private space that’s hard to find in a city. Since these destinations can be difficult to reach, the hotels often help arrange transportation. Guests may travel by private plane or luxury yacht, with fewer transfers and less contact with large crowds, so the peaceful, uninterrupted experience can begin from the moment they set off.
Does enjoying luxury always mean being wasteful? Not necessarily. Along with creating comfortable and relaxing spaces for guests, many hotels and resorts are now asking whether a trip can leave a positive impact on the local area. Take Six Senses Laamu in the Maldives, for example. The resort established its own marine research team that uses coral restoration methods to protect damaged reefs. They have released nearly four million coral larvae into the ocean, and guests can join marine biologists to plant coral on natural reefs themselves.
Another example is Awasi, a luxury hotel in Patagonia, Chile. To help protect pumas, which have long been hunted, Awasi created a wildlife corridor that allows them to move safely through the area. It also trains former shepherds and puma hunters—who understand these animals better than anyone—to become professional conservation trackers. They take hotel guests deep into the wilderness to check hidden cameras and record important wildlife conservation data. Whether restoring marine ecosystems or helping solve conflicts between people and wildlife, both luxury hotels are actively investing in the environment and local communities. By combining guest well-being with ecosystem restoration, they create lasting benefits for nature, local residents, and travelers alike.
From restorative trips and uninterrupted quiet time to choices that support the environment and local communities, these experiences all reflect how Quiet Luxury is changing the way we travel. Instead of spending on flashy displays or using luxury brands as a measure of success, more people are choosing to pay for quality and experiences that truly matter to them. This way of thinking can be applied to everyday life too. Whether we are planning a trip or buying something, we can pause and ask: Do I really need this? Is this experience worth the money? Or am I simply trying to follow a trend or win other people’s approval?
